Judith Allen is currently serving as consultant for the restoration/renovation of 4 theatres on Canal Street in New Orleans, which were damaged by Katrina. Previously, she consulted with the Nederlander Broadway China initiative-a project which involved research for the privatization/renovation of 9 theatres across China and the establishment of a Broadway (and other western product) network across China. Allen also served as President of the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center (Charlotte, NC) from 1990 until 2003. Under her leadership, the Center became a $25 million annual operation with a national reputation for Broadway and other offerings. She oversaw the design and construction of this 190,000 sq. ft. facility, which includes two theaters. She also oversaw the restoration of a 90,000 sq. ft. historic facility, which includes 3 galleries, 2 theatres, 10 classrooms/ensemble/rehearsal rooms, and office space, developed and implemented a plan for adaptive reuse and took over the management and operation of the facility. The Center ranks among the leading performing arts centers in the country providing a full range of cultural activities, including its nationally recognized Education Institute. Prior to joining the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, Judith served a five-year tenure as Managing Director of the Bushnell, a premier 2,800-seat performing arts center in Hartford, CT., where she oversaw the final phase of restoration of this historic 1929 facility, developed and implemented an adaptive reuse plan, which brought the Bushnell back to its national stature.
Before joining the Bushnell, Allen served as Director of Programming for five years at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and as Director of the Fine Arts Center at the University of Rhode Island. She has served as a consultant on numerous facility projects, including the Cultural and Community Center in Maui, Hawaii; the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark; the Columbus Performing Arts Center in Georgia; the Jacksonville Performing Arts Center and Miami Performing Arts Center in Florida; and the Performing Arts Center in Hilton Head, South Carolina, among others.
Professional and Other organizations: Currently serving as a member of ETV, South Carolina (Public Broadcast TV, Radio and Education); Former Executive Committee Member, The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc.; Past President, National Alliance of Musical Theatre; Past President of the International Society for the Performing Arts; and former Board Member of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters.
