Richard DeRosa has toured the world having performed and/or recorded with Gerry Mulligan, Bob Brookmeyer, Susannah McCorkle, Jackie Cain & Roy Kral, Marlene VerPlanck, Marian McPartland, Gene Bertoncini, Peter Nero, Chuck Wayne, Harry Sheppard, Chris Connor and Larry Elgart.
His credits as a jazz arranger include recorded arrangements for Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Wynton w/Strings, the Mel Lewis, Gerry Mulligan and Glenn Miller big bands and vocalist Susannah McCorkle. He also served as co-arranger, orchestrator and conductor for critically the acclaimed recording projects, Dial & Oatts: Brassworks and When Winter Comes featuring guitarist Fred Fried.
Other works for jazz ensemble are published by Alfred Music, Kendor, and Smart Chart Music and his music has been performed by such prestigious groups as The Metropole Orchestra in Holland, The RYAS Big Band in Berlin, Germany; the Philharmonic Orchestra of Stockholm, Sweden; the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, Switzerland; the Portland Symphony Orchestra (ME) and the One O’clock Band at North Texas State University.
Mr. DeRosa’s commissions include an original work for the New Jersey City University percussion ensemble in celebration of the new millennium. The CD recording, entitled Millennium was released in November, 1999; in 2005 he completed a 15-minute orchestral suite celebrating the 150th anniversary of William Paterson University.
Mr. DeRosa also has composed for the commercial media. Television credits include Another World, As the World Turns, The Guiding Light and commercials for Telex, Bristol-Meyers and Kodak in addition to various documentary films for PBS and independent feature films. His works for video and audio projects have been published by Jumbo Pictures, Lucasfilm, BantamDoubledayDell, Scholastic, Penguin and Random House. His scores for the theater company ArtsPower have been performed throughout the USA including the Kennedy Center for the Arts, the Paper Mill Playhouse and NJPac.
Mr. DeRosa is a tenured professor at William Paterson University in New Jersey, serving as the head of jazz composition/arranging studies. He also teaches an advanced arranging course for studio orchestra at the Juilliard School. He has taught previously at the Manhattan School of Music, Princeton University, New Jersey City University and Lehman College and has served as an adjudicator, clinician and/or guest lecturer at colleges and music festivals around the United States and in Sweden and Italy. He is the author of two textbooks: Concepts for Improvisation: A Comprehensive Guide for Performing and Teaching, published 1997, through Hal Leonard Publications; Acoustic and MIDI Orchestration, published 2007 through Focal Press Publications. Mr. DeRosa’s service to teaching was duly recognized upon his nomination for inclusion in the 3rd edition (1994) of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
